Permanent
Pacemaker Placement

Permanent pacemaker placement procedure

A pacemaker is a small medical device implanted under the skin that sends gentle electrical signals to the heart, helping it maintain a normal rhythm and rate. We use pacemakers to treat conditions like bradycardia (a slow heart rate), which can lead to fatigue, dizziness, or even fainting spells.

Why a Pacemaker May Be Needed

In a healthy heart, the sinoatrial (SA) node, the heart’s natural pacemaker, generates electrical impulses 60 to 100 times per minute. These impulses trigger each heartbeat. However, due to age, illness, or certain heart conditions, the SA node may begin to fire irregularly or too slowly. When this happens, an artificial pacemaker can take over or support the heart’s natural rhythm.

Knowing what to expect can help ease nerves and give you confidence in your care.

  • You’ll receive sedation and local anesthesia to help you stay relaxed and comfortable.
  • A small 2–3 inch incision is made just beneath the collarbone.
  • One or more electrodes (leads) are inserted through a nearby vein and carefully guided into the heart.
  • These leads are gently anchored to the heart muscle with tiny, screw-like tips.
  • The leads are then connected to the pacemaker generator, a small device that’s placed just under the skin near your shoulder.
  • The incision is closed with sutures, and the device is tested before you leave the hospital.

Following implantation, your pacemaker will be monitored regularly through follow-up visits and remote device checks (available in some cases from the comfort of your home). These checks allow your care team to:

  • Monitor battery life
  • Adjust settings as needed
  • Track how often your pacemaker is supporting your heartbeat
  • Review your heart’s intrinsic rhythm

With the right follow-up and care, most patients return to normal daily activities within a few days.
