Implantable Defibrillator (ICD) Placement

Protecting Your Heart with Advanced Rhythm Management

An implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD) is a small, life-saving medical device placed under the skin to monitor and regulate abnormal heart rhythms. At Orion, we use ICDs to protect patients at high risk of sudden cardiac arrest or life-threatening arrhythmias.

An ICD performs two key functions:

  • It works as a pacemaker, sending gentle electrical impulses to maintain a normal heart rate when it’s too slow.
  • If a dangerous rhythm is detected, the ICD delivers a quick shock to restore the heart’s normal rhythm, helping to prevent sudden cardiac death.

An ICD may be recommended for individuals who are at risk for serious heart rhythm disorders, such as those with:

  • Severe congestive heart failure
  • A history of ventricular tachycardia or fibrillation
  • A previous cardiac arrest
  • Weakened heart muscle from a previous heart attack or cardiomyopathy

All ICDs serve a dual purpose; they can both pace the heart and deliver life-saving defibrillation when necessary.

Our team takes time to walk you through the entire process so you feel informed, reassured, and supported.

  • You’ll receive sedation and local anesthesia to keep you comfortable.
  • A small 2–3 inch incision is made beneath the collarbone.
  • One or more electrodes (leads) are inserted through a vein and guided into the heart.
  • These leads are gently secured in place using small, screw-like tips and connected to the ICD generator.
  • The generator is implanted under the skin, typically near the shoulder.
  • Once positioned, the device is tested, and the incision is closed with sutures.

Following your procedure, your ICD will be closely monitored through regular in-office visits and, in many cases, remote home monitoring. These follow-ups allow your care team to:

  • Check battery life
  • Review how often the device is pacing or delivering therapy
  • Monitor your heart’s natural rhythm
  • Most patients return to their normal daily activities within a few days and feel peace of mind knowing they have around-the-clock protection against dangerous heart rhythms.

At Orion, your safety is our top priority. Our electrophysiology specialists are highly trained in implantable defibrillator therapy, offering individualized care and cutting-edge solutions to help you live confidently with a strong and steady heart.
