Coronary angioplasty, also known as percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI), is a procedure used to restore blood flow in blocked or narrowed coronary arteries. These blockages are often caused by plaque buildup, a result of coronary artery disease, that restricts blood supply to the heart muscle.
Angioplasty is commonly performed in patients experiencing symptoms such as chest pain (angina) or shortness of breath and in patients actively having a heart attack. In addition to relieving symptoms, this procedure may also help reduce the risk of heart attacks and, in some cases, save lives.
Coronary angioplasty is typically performed immediately after a cardiac catheterization, which identifies the location and severity of blockages.
A thin, flexible catheter is inserted into a blood vessel in the wrist or groin and carefully guided to the heart. Once the blockage is located, a tiny wire is passed through the artery, followed by a small balloon, which is inflated to open the narrowed area.
In most cases, a stent, a tiny metal mesh tube, is placed at the site of the blockage to help keep the artery open long-term. The stent is delivered on a balloon and expands when the balloon is inflated, pressing the plaque against the artery walls and restoring blood flow.
Over time, the artery wall naturally heals and grows over the stent, like how ivy may grow over a fence. To support this healing process and prevent complications, your physician will prescribe specific medications, including:
A second antiplatelet medication (such as clopidogrel, prasugrel, or ticagrelor) for a period of time based on your condition and the type of stent used.
It’s critical not to stop these medications without consulting your physician, as they play a key role in preventing blood clots and ensuring long-term success of the procedure.
